Press Release:
Insulate now to cut energy bills

Release Date 12 November 2013

The rising cost of our energy has become a hot topic in recent weeks. With a cold winter ahead of us and the cost of the typical annual energy bill now just under £1,500! The National Insulation Association (NIA) is urging householders to act now and insulate.

According to a recent survey** carried out by ITV's Tonight programme energy bills are a source of growing concern amongst many households with 79% saying they put on outdoor clothes in order to stay warm indoors, and 30% were worried about having to make a choice between heating and eating this winter.

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA commented: "Home insulation is the most cost effective way of saving on domestic energy bills. An astounding 59% of heat can be lost through uninsulated walls and roofs; but with the right measures put in place, householders could be making huge savings on their energy bills.

"The Energy Saving Trust reports that by simply installing Cavity Wall Insulation savings of up to £140* per year can be made and £180* per year from Loft Insulation. Draught-proofing windows and doors can save £30* per year and when installed with other measures will greatly increase the comfort in a home. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls up to £490* per year.

"For those households struggling to pay these ever increasing bills there is also help available in the form of the Energy Company Obligation scheme which provides free and subsidised insulation measures."

Householders are advised to contact an NIA member today who can advise them on the most appropriate and efficient method possible of insulating their home and the help available to fund these. Furthermore, NIA members adhere to a strict Code of Professional Practice so peace of mind comes as standard.

* Based on a typical three-bedroom semi-detached gas heated house installing cavity wall insulation. Loft insulation savings when you insulate an uninsulated loft. Solid wall insulation saving is the average saving between internal and external solid wall insulation. Both with an 80% efficient gas boiler and average gas tariff of 4.64p/kWh and electricity tariff of 15.32p/kWh; correct as of December 2012 and valid for 2013. Figures from the EST.

** Survey of 1500 people, conducted by OnePoll for the Tonight programme.
