Press Release:
NIA advise those at risk to insulate ready for winter

Release Date 31 October 2013

The Department of Health and Public Health England have published guidance in an attempt to reduce thousands of avoidable deaths each winter caused by flu and infections. Part of the guidance suggests that the public should take measures to reduce heat waste, such as draught proofing and insulation. Therefore, the National Insulation Association (NIA) is urging older people and those in fuel poverty to act now and insulate their properties.

The guidance states that this winter as many as 24,000 older people in the UK could die needlessly because of the cold. That's around 200 preventable deaths a day*. The NIA advise that insulation is an essential measure in creating a warm and more comfortable home in the winter.

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA commented: "An astounding 59% of heat can be lost through uninsulated walls and roofs; but with the right measures put in place, householders could be making huge savings on their fuel bills. The Energy Saving Trust reports that by simply installing Cavity Wall Insulation savings of up to £140** per year can be made and £180** per year from Loft Insulation. Draught-proofing windows and doors can save £30** per year and when installed with other measures will greatly increase the comfort in a home. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls up to £490** per year!

"For those households struggling to pay these ever increasing bills there is also help available in the form of the Energy Company Obligation scheme which provides free and subsidised insulation measures."

With around 7m solid walls, 5m cavity walls and 7m lofts that need insulating in the UK. Householders are advised to contact an NIA member today who can advise them on the most appropriate and efficient method possible of insulating their home and the help available to fund these. Furthermore, NIA members adhere to a strict Code of Professional Practice so peace of mind comes as standard.

To find out more, or to contact their local installer, householders should visit the NIA website on or call 08451 636363

* Cold Weather Plan October 2013 states that there over 24,000 avoidable deaths each winter in England and Wales.
