Press Release:
1 in 3 households in Wales live in fuel poverty

Release Date 20 June 2013

Recent figures released by the Welsh Assembly show that 30% of households in Wales were living in fuel poverty in 2012. The National Insulation Association (NIA) and National Energy Action (NEA) Cymru are urging householders in the UK to think smart and install insulation to help fight fuel poverty.

An astounding 60% of heat can be lost through uninsulated walls and roofs, with the right measures put in place, householders could make huge savings by reducing their fuel bills. The Energy Saving Trust reports that by simply installing cavity wall and loft insulation, savings of up to £320* per year can be made. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls and lofts at up to £655** per year.

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA, commented: "Home insulation is the single most effective method of saving money on domestic energy bills, with savings continuing year on year! Fuel poverty is an escalating problem in the current economic climate all over the UK but householders should be aware that installing home insulation can help combat fuel poverty."

Carole Morgan-Jones, Director, National Energy Action Cymru: "It's disappointing but not unexpected that fuel poverty levels have increased in Wales and unfortunately it's the most vulnerable, including the sick and elderly, who suffer the most. We know that many households in Wales are struggling with high energy and food bills and are worried about the continuing upward trend in energy prices. These issues are all having an effect on people's ability to afford to heat their home to a comfortable level.

Improving the energy efficiency of your property can have a significant impact in improving the comfort of your home but households in Wales should seek appropriate and independent advice before agreeing on any installation works. The Welsh Government's energy efficiency scheme 'Nest' may also be able to help people to stay warm with free home improvements for eligible households."

Householders are advised to contact an NIA member today who can advise them on the most appropriate and efficient method possible of insulating their home.

To find a local NIA member, householders and landlords should visit the NIA website or call 08451 636363.

* Based on adding cavity wall insulation (CWI) (saving around £140 per year) and loft insulation (LI) of 270mm (saving around £180 per year). Savings based on an uninsulated three bed semi-detached gas heated house. Figures from the Energy Saving Trust.

** Estimated savings if an uninsulated home installed Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) (saving of around £475) and Loft Insulation (LI) (saving around £180) to the recommended depth of 270mm - based on a three bed gas heated semi-detached house. Figures from the Energy Saving Trust.
