Big Energy Saving Week 2015
The National Insulation Association (NIA) is urging the public to take advantage of Big Energy Saving Week and insulate their homes before winter sets in.
Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA commented: "26-30 October is Big Energy Saving Week and will see numerous helpful facts given about saving costs on fuels bills in particular switching energy supplier. But we must stress that above all else, fitting adequate insulation first needs to be the priority. Approximately 33 per cent of heat is lost through the walls of a home, and 26 per cent through the roof. Doing so will enable householders to make major savings on their fuel bills year after year without even having to think about it.
"The amounts that can be saved on fuel bills are substantial; The Energy Saving Trust reports that by simply installing Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) savings from £90* up to £275* per year can be made on your energy bills, depending on the size of your home. If your loft is currently uninsulated, insulation could save from £135* up to £240* a year – even if you have some loft insulation topping up to 270mm could save you money. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls, from £145* per year in a typical gas-heated flat, up to £455* per year in a detached home! Draught-proofing windows and doors can save between £15 and £50* per year and when installed with other measures will greatly increase the comfort in a home."
Marshall went on to voice his concerns over the millions of households that are yet to be properly insulated; "It is staggering that despite years of campaigning, and rising energy bills over 7million solid walls and 5 million cavity walls still need insulating. There are also 7 million lofts that have inadequate insulation and are still in need of topping up."
The NIA advises householders that the best way to find out if their home requires insulation is to contact an NIA installer member for a free survey and quotation plus advice on any help that is available to pay for the insulation.
Homeowners can also be safe in the knowledge that an NIA installer will have signed up to a strict Code of Professional Practice, meaning peace of mind comes as standard with an NIA approved member.
To find out more, or to contact their local installer, householders should visit the NIA website on www.niaconsumer.co.uk or call 08451 636363.
* All savings are based on a gas heated property with an 82% efficient boiler. Savings ranges represent the different savings which can be made in different property types. The lower end of the savings range represents installation in a 2 bedroom flat, the larger end represents installation in a 4 bed detached home. Loft top-up savings range is based on topping up from 120-270mm. Figures from Energy Saving Trust and correct for 2015.
