We work with our members to encourage the highest level of quality, standards and customer service across the insulation industry.

The least efficient and most expensive energy in life is the energy we needlessly waste.

Retrofitting the UK’s homes and buildings to prevent energy from being lost is one of the largest but most important challenges of our generation. Ensuring the built environment is fit for a net-zero economy will not just help combat climate change but also cut energy bills for consumers, make homes more comfortable and promote economic growth.

The National Insulation Association (NIA) exists to promote a more energy-efficient built environment and our members are fully committed to maintaining and raising standards within the insulation industry. Only by delivering a positive result for customers today can we convince the customers of tomorrow to invest in insulating their properties.

As an industry forum, our focus is on encouraging active discussion, debate and ideas whilst working collaboratively with industry colleagues, policymakers, and other stakeholders to drive the energy efficiency agenda forwards.

Who We Represent

The National Insulation Association represents the organisations active in the insulation industry across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. From John O’Groats to Land’s End, NIA members are playing an active role in growing the green economy.

Our members include manufacturers of insulation materials and products, system designers who combine products into building solutions and professional installers of insulation – all of whom must adhere to NIA membership requirements and wider industry standards.

As an inclusive organisation, we welcome interest from anyone interested in the industry and our membership already includes providers of a wide range of products and services vital for the insulation industry, including OFGEM / TrustMark approved guarantees, software, and training.

Our Impact

Our vision is for all buildings to be affordable, energy-efficient and fit for purpose in a low carbon future. We believe that a fabric first approach to energy efficiency must be taken to reduce energy demand from buildings, tackle fuel poverty, meet UK climate targets, and deliver economic, social and economic benefits to the wider economy.

We create impact by shaping and encouraging robust policy frameworks that support the delivery of high-quality insulation solutions for homes and buildings. Effective implementation of policy is key and we work collaboratively and inclusively with our members and policymakers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to maximise the chances of success no matter how challenging the issue.

The NIA has helped secure major new funding for the energy efficiency sector over the past two years, including extensions to the Energy Company Obligation, Green Homes Grant (England only), Local Authority Delivery (LAD) funding, Home Upgrade Funding (HUGS) and the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. We are working closely with policymakers to maximise the success of these policies.

We also have a significant impact through our work supporting growth within the insulation industry. We have championed the continuous improvement of standards and support members and stakeholders to overcome challenges and barriers.

Ultimately our impact is derived through helping members to grow by delivering an increasing volume of professionally installed insulation measures in buildings throughout the UK. We have a long way to go but are determined to drive this transition forward.

Our Policy Work

Policy and regulation are critical to driving activity across the energy efficiency sector. Regulatory frameworks affect how much we pay for energy, how it is delivered and used within properties. For energy efficiency measures, incentives (carrots) and regulation (sticks) are used across the world to encourage action by consumers.

The NIA’s policy work is one of the most important elements of our service to members. We are engaged with key stakeholders across all four nations of the UK, responding to requests for information, policy consultations and developing our own proposals. Members are involved throughout this process, alongside an expert secretariat, providing decades of specialist experience and expertise in policy engagement.

Governance

Membership of the National Insulation Association is open to companies active within the insulation sector and members pay a membership fee relative to their activities and annual turnover. Members participate in a range of working groups around individual topics, geographies or areas of the association’s work. For example, our policy working brings members together to discuss and formulate responses to key consultation documents.

The association is governed by an elected Board of Directors and is currently Chaired by Derek Horrocks. Further details of our board members can be found below:

  • Derek Horrocks (Chair), Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd
  • David Robson, Insta Group
  • Martin Clayton, GTI Direct
  • Tim Deathridge, STO
  • George Donaldson, Insulation Solutions Scotland
  • Danielle Belton, Saving Energy UK
